The Sokyryntsi Vertep
A Ukrainian Christmas Puppet Theatre
This December, a Ukrainian Christmas puppet theatre dating back to 1770 comes to the stage in Bexhill.
The Sokyryntsi Vertep combines the Nativity story with live music, puppetry, comedy and characters from eighteenth-century Ukrainian life. Based on surviving historical texts, music, puppets and descriptions of the original theatre, Culbaba’s production brings this remarkable Christmas tradition to a British audience more than 250 years later.
