Cultural Focus

Culbaba Theatre is a Ukrainian cultural organisation based in East Sussex, dedicated to preserving and performing authentic Ukrainian traditional song and theatrical heritage.

We work with historical repertoire, regional vocal traditions and ritual performance practices that form part of Ukraine’s intangible cultural heritage. Our artistic programme prioritises original sources, lesser-known material and historically grounded interpretation, ensuring that what we present reflects cultural depth and context.

For us, heritage is not decorative — it carries memory, identity and lived experience.

Research & Artistic Practice

Our work is rooted in research and historical understanding. We draw on archival materials, ethnographic studies and documented regional traditions to inform performance and education.

Each project is developed with attention to authenticity, artistic quality and cultural responsibility. We seek to represent Ukrainian tradition with clarity and integrity, avoiding oversimplification while making heritage accessible to contemporary audiences in the UK.

Performance, in our practice, is a form of cultural continuity.

People & Purpose

Founded by Ukrainian women with artistic and educational backgrounds, Culbaba Theatre approaches performance as cultural preservation rather than entertainment alone.

We believe Ukrainian culture deserves to be presented with knowledge, care and artistic responsibility. Through performance, workshops and collaboration, we aim to strengthen cultural understanding, support displaced communities and contribute thoughtfully to the UK cultural landscape.
