On 4 May, Culbaba Theatre proudly took part in Hastings Traditional Jack in the Green for the second year running – one of the most vibrant and beloved traditional festivals in the UK.
Last year was a milestone for us. Culbaba Theatre became the first organised Ukrainian group in the festival's history to join the procession and bring Ukrainian song to its stages. This year, we returned with experience, confidence and even bigger ambitions.
Preparation began more than a month before the festival. Our team dedicated countless hours to designing and creating flower decorations, and the giant yellow Culbaba bird that has become one of our most recognisable symbols. Judging by the reactions of the crowd, the effort was more than worthwhile. Visitors were especially curious about the bright yellow bird soaring above the procession.
The weather could not have been better. Against a clear blue sky, the Culbaba bird danced proudly above Hastings, peeking into windows and balconies, delighting spectators along the route. Ukrainian songs rang out through the streets, smiles were shared freely, and somehow tired feet never seemed to notice the miles walked.
As has become something of a tradition, a Ukrainians who had arrived to join the procession but somehow lost track of their own groups in the crowds joined us instead. Fortunately, the giant yellow Culbaba bird is difficult to miss, making our group an excellent landmark for any lost souls navigating the festival crowds. Culbaba Theatre once again became a meeting point for community, friendship and shared identity.
We are incredibly grateful to the organisers of Hastings Traditional Jack in the Green for welcoming us back and for preserving such a unique and joyful tradition. It was also wonderful to reconnect with fellow participants, meet new people and celebrate alongside the many creative groups that make this festival so special.
We left Hastings inspired, energised and already full of ideas for the future.
And yes — we will be back next year.
